PRAYERS AGAINST SPIRITUAL ARROWS

                                 PRAYERS AGAINST SPIRITUAL ARROWS

Opening Scriptures

Psalm 91:5–7 (KJV)

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”

Ephesians 6:16–18 (KJV)

“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”

Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)

“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.”

INTRODUCTION

Introduction

There are battles that are visible, and there are battles whose effects are felt before their source is understood. Scripture repeatedly presents the Christian life as a life of spiritual resistance. The believer is not called to live in fear of darkness, but neither are we called to become careless about the reality of spiritual opposition. Paul tells us to put on the whole armour of God because our struggle is not merely against what can be seen with the natural eye.

One of the powerful pictures Scripture gives us is that of “fiery darts.” An arrow is designed to travel from a distance and strike its target. In the spiritual picture, it reminds us of attacks that seek to penetrate the mind, weaken faith, produce fear, stir temptation, create confusion, or discourage the believer from standing firmly in Christ. But the same Scripture that warns us about the arrows also gives us the answer: the shield of faith.

When we speak of spiritual arrows, we are speaking about spiritual opposition that seeks to produce negative consequences in the realities of a person’s life. An arrow is not released without direction; it is released toward a target. In the same way, Scripture’s language of fiery darts gives us a picture of hostile spiritual activity that seeks to strike, weaken, hinder, disrupt, or destroy. The effects may be seen in different areas of life; health, family, marriage, relationships, finances, business, career, opportunities, plans, progress, peace, or other important areas of human existence. The battle may not always announce itself as a spiritual battle, but its effects can touch very practical and tangible parts of life.

This is why the subject of spiritual arrows should not be reduced to thoughts alone. A person’s life is made up of many dimensions, and spiritual warfare can be understood in relation to those dimensions. An attack may seek to bring persistent conflict into a family, repeated breakdown into relationships, frustration into legitimate efforts, loss into valuable opportunities, confusion into important decisions, or discouragement into a season where perseverance is required. Scripture itself contains numerous accounts of God’s people facing opposition that affected their circumstances, their families, their possessions, their assignments, and their journeys.

The picture of an arrow is powerful because an arrow is meant to penetrate. It does not merely pass by its target; it is designed to make contact. This is why the language of Psalm 91:5 is so significant: “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.” The Bible acknowledges the existence of the arrow, but it also reveals that the presence of an arrow does not mean the destruction of the person it was aimed at. There is a God who protects, delivers, preserves, and sustains His people.

Some arrows are aimed at what a person has built. Some are aimed at relationships that matter. Some are aimed at opportunities that could move a person forward. Some seek to produce repeated patterns of loss, frustration, conflict, disappointment, or stagnation. Some may manifest through circumstances that seem to continually work against a person’s efforts. The point is not to assume that every hardship is caused by a spiritual arrow, but to recognize that Scripture does teach the reality of spiritual opposition and calls believers to respond with spiritual discernment and faith.

There are battles that can affect what happens around you without defining who you are within. A person can be working hard and still encounter unusual opposition. A family can desire peace and yet experience repeated conflict. Someone can have legitimate opportunities and repeatedly encounter obstacles. A person can begin something with expectation and repeatedly face circumstances that threaten to bring it down. These situations require wisdom, prayer, discernment, and practical action, not fear and not careless assumptions.

This is also why the language of “arrows” is different from simply talking about general hardship. An arrow suggests intentionality and direction. It speaks of something being sent toward a target. The biblical imagery therefore calls attention to the reality that spiritual warfare can involve opposition directed against areas of a person’s life. But even where Scripture warns about such opposition, it consistently points the believer back to God as refuge, defender, deliverer, and shield.

The enemy may seek to attack, but God remains the keeper.

The enemy may seek to scatter, but God can preserve.

The enemy may seek to destroy, but God is able to restore.

The enemy may seek to close doors, but God remains sovereign over the life of His people.

The enemy may seek to bring fear, but the child of God does not have to surrender to fear.

This is why Psalm 91 does not merely speak about arrows; it speaks about God’s protection in the midst of danger. Isaiah 54:17 declares, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” Ephesians 6:16 tells the believer to take up the shield of faith “wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” These Scriptures do not teach us to become obsessed with identifying every possible attack. They teach us to become established in God so that when opposition comes, our confidence remains in Him.

Spiritual arrows may be understood as attacks that seek to affect the fruit of a person’s life, but they do not have the final word. A season of difficulty is not a prophecy of permanent destruction. A battle in one area does not mean defeat in every area. A closed opportunity does not mean every future opportunity is closed. A difficult season does not mean God has abandoned His people.

There is therefore a place for aggressive prayer, not aggressive against people, but against every work of evil that contradicts the purposes of God. We do not wage war against flesh and blood. We do not turn our pain into hatred for human beings. We bring the battle before God and ask Him to intervene, expose what needs to be exposed, destroy what needs to be destroyed, heal what has been wounded, restore what has been lost, protect what has been entrusted to us, and establish His will in our lives.

The prayer of spiritual warfare is therefore a declaration of dependence upon God. It is saying, “Lord, whatever is working against what You have permitted in my life, intervene. Whatever is seeking to destroy what You have entrusted to me, defend me. Whatever is bringing unnecessary oppression, give me victory. Whatever has been damaged, give me grace for restoration. Whatever needs to be confronted, give me wisdom and strength.”

And this is where the believer’s confidence becomes powerful: the arrow is not greater than the shield.

The attack is not greater than the God who defends.

The opposition is not greater than the One who sustains His people.

The weapon is not greater than the authority of God.

Therefore, these prayers are prayers of resistance, protection, restoration, and victory. They are prayers for every area of life that may come under pressure, while keeping our confidence firmly in the Lord. We are not praying in fear of what the enemy can do; we are praying in faith because of what God can do.

May every area of your life that has come under unusual opposition receive divine intervention. May what has been attacked receive preservation. May what has been damaged receive restoration. May what has been hindered receive fresh strength. May what has been surrounded by confusion receive clarity. May what has been weakened be strengthened. And may every work that is contrary to the will of God lose its influence over your life.

For the Lord is still a shield to His people, and the God who kept His servants throughout Scripture remains able to keep, defend, restore, and deliver.

10 Ways to Identify Spiritual Arrows

1. Repeated Patterns of Unexplained Setbacks
When the same type of setback keeps occurring repeatedly despite genuine efforts to move forward, it may call for deeper spiritual discernment and prayer.

2. Persistent Attacks Against Family and Relationships
Repeated, unusual conflict, division, misunderstanding, or breakdown of important relationships can be an area to bring before God in prayer and examine carefully.

3. Constant Frustration Around Genuine Opportunities
When legitimate opportunities repeatedly arise but seem to encounter unusual obstacles, cancellations, disappointments, or disruptions, it may be a matter to seek God’s direction about.

4. Repeated Losses and Destructive Cycles
A recurring pattern of losing valuable things, experiencing the same kind of failure repeatedly, or constantly rebuilding what keeps collapsing can be a reason for spiritual reflection and prayer.

5. Persistent Battles Affecting Progress
When sincere effort is repeatedly followed by circumstances that seem to pull you backward, especially in several areas of life, it is important to pray for wisdom, discernment, and intervention.

6. Unusual Conflict Surrounding Important Steps
When significant transitions, opportunities, relationships, or legitimate plans repeatedly become surrounded by intense confusion and conflict, do not ignore the pattern. Seek God and examine both spiritual and practical causes.

7. Recurring Problems in Important Areas of Life
When the same troubling pattern repeatedly appears in areas such as family, marriage, work, business, finances, or relationships, it deserves careful attention rather than simply being dismissed.

8. Sudden Disruption of What Was Progressing Well
When something that was developing positively experiences a sudden and unexplained series of serious disruptions, it can be a reason to pause, pray, reassess, and seek wise counsel.

9. Persistent Opposition That Produces Fear and Discouragement
When circumstances repeatedly become so overwhelming that they begin to attack your courage, hope, and ability to continue, recognize the need for both spiritual strengthening and practical support.

10. A Pattern That Appears to Repeat Across Different Seasons
When the same kind of destructive outcome continues appearing at different times and in different circumstances, examine the pattern carefully. Pray for discernment, identify practical factors that may contribute to it, and ask God for wisdom to break unhealthy cycles.

10 Ways to Destroy or Resist Spiritual Arrows

1. Raise the Shield of Faith
Ephesians 6:16 tells us to take up the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the wicked. Refuse to allow fear, circumstances, or repeated disappointments to become greater than your confidence in God.

2. Stand Firmly on the Word of God
God’s Word is the believer’s weapon against deception and spiritual opposition. Speak, meditate on, and stand upon what Scripture says concerning your life rather than allowing circumstances to have the final word.

3. Pray With Persistence and Spiritual Authority
Do not abandon prayer because a situation has persisted. Bring the matter continually before God, asking Him for intervention, protection, wisdom, restoration, and victory.

4. Reject Every Pattern That Contradicts God’s Will
Where you recognize destructive patterns in your life, do not simply pray against them while continuing to participate in what feeds them. Repent where necessary, make wise changes, and deliberately choose obedience to God.

5. Cover Your Family and Household in Prayer
Commit your family, marriage, children, relationships, home, and everything entrusted to you into God’s hands. Pray for protection, unity, wisdom, peace, and preservation.

6. Close Doors to Sin and Destructive Influences
Spiritual resistance also requires personal responsibility. Avoid habits, relationships, environments, and choices that repeatedly lead you away from righteousness and make you vulnerable to destructive patterns.

7. Break Agreement With Fear, Lies, and Condemnation
Refuse to accept every negative thought or prediction as truth. Test what you hear against God’s Word. Replace destructive beliefs with the truth of Scripture.

8. Seek God for Restoration and Not Only Protection
When something has already been damaged, do not only pray, “Lord, protect me.” Ask God for restoration. Pray over what has been lost, damaged, delayed, broken, or weakened and trust Him for wisdom concerning the steps required.

9. Use Wisdom Alongside Prayer
Spiritual warfare does not eliminate practical responsibility. If the issue concerns health, finances, business, relationships, work, or legal matters, pray while also taking appropriate practical steps and seeking qualified help where necessary.

10. Remain Standing Until the Battle Passes
Ephesians 6:13 says, “having done all, to stand.” Do not allow prolonged difficulty to make you abandon your faith. Continue praying, obeying God, making wise decisions, and trusting Him even when the answer does not come immediately.
