PRAYERS AGAINST STILLBIRTH

                                PRAYERS AGAINST STILLBIRTH

OPENING SCRIPTURES

Psalm 91:10–11 (KJV)

“There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”

Exodus 23:25–26 (KJV)

“And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.”

Psalm 121:7–8 (KJV)

“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

INTRODUCTION

Pregnancy is a season that carries hope, expectation, and deep anticipation. From the moment a child is conceived, a mother begins to imagine the life that is growing within her. Every movement, every medical appointment, and every passing month can become a reminder that a precious life is being carried. This is why the thought of losing a baby before birth can be deeply frightening and painful.

Stillbirth is a serious pregnancy outcome in which a baby dies before or during birth. It can happen for different medical reasons, and sometimes the exact cause cannot be identified. Therefore, we should never automatically conclude that such a loss happened because of a person’s lack of faith, sin, prayerlessness, or some spiritual failure. God is compassionate toward those who experience pregnancy loss, and His presence remains with people even in seasons they do not understand.

At the same time, the Word of God gives believers a place to stand in prayer. Scripture repeatedly presents God as the One who preserves, protects, sustains, and gives life. We can therefore come before Him with faith, asking Him to preserve mother and child, expose medical complications early, guide healthcare professionals, strengthen the pregnancy and grant safe delivery.

Prayer should not replace medical care. Rather, prayer and responsible medical care can go together. A woman carrying a pregnancy should attend antenatal appointments, follow medical advice, report concerning symptoms promptly, and seek urgent care when something feels wrong. Sometimes an early medical assessment can identify a problem that requires immediate treatment or closer monitoring.

So today, we are not praying from a place of fear. We are praying from a place of faith and dependence upon God. We are asking the Lord to surround the mother and baby with His protection, to preserve the pregnancy, to give wisdom to doctors and midwives, and to bring the pregnancy safely to its appointed conclusion.

We are also praying against fear, anxiety, and hopelessness. A previous pregnancy loss can make a subsequent pregnancy especially difficult emotionally. But previous pain does not mean that the same outcome must happen again. Each pregnancy deserves appropriate medical care, careful monitoring, and renewed hope.

As we pray, let every fear of bad news be brought before God. Let every anxious thought be surrendered to Him. Let us ask for wisdom to recognize warning signs, courage to seek help when necessary, and grace to follow every appropriate medical instruction.

We declare our dependence upon the God who gives life and sustains His creation. We ask Him to preserve mother and child, strengthen the pregnancy, guide every medical decision, and bring forth a safe delivery.

May the Lord surround every expectant mother with peace. May He grant wisdom, protection, and timely medical intervention wherever it is needed. May every pregnancy receive the care and attention necessary for mother and baby to remain as safe as possible.

And as we pray these prayers, may faith rise above fear, may wisdom overcome anxiety, and may the peace of God guard every heart.

WAYS TO HELP REDUCE THE RISK OF STILLBIRTH

1. Attend antenatal appointments consistently

Regular antenatal care allows healthcare professionals to monitor the mother’s health, the baby’s growth, and other important aspects of the pregnancy.

2. Report unusual symptoms promptly

Symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, severe headache or visual changes, leaking fluid, or a significant reduction or change in the baby’s usual movements should receive prompt medical attention.

3. Pay attention to the baby’s usual movements

After movements become established, a noticeable reduction or change in the baby’s normal movement pattern can require urgent assessment. Do not wait until the next appointment if movements are significantly reduced.

4. Manage existing health conditions

Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and other pregnancy-related complications may require careful monitoring and treatment during pregnancy.

5. Take prescribed medicines correctly

Pregnant women should take medications prescribed by qualified healthcare professionals as directed and should ask before starting medicines or supplements that have not been recommended for them.

6. Avoid harmful substances

Alcohol, smoking, and exposure to certain harmful substances can increase pregnancy risks. Pregnant women should discuss any substance exposure with a healthcare professional.

7. Follow specialist advice for high-risk pregnancies

Some pregnancies require additional monitoring because of the mother’s health, previous pregnancy history or complications affecting the pregnancy.

8. Seek urgent care when something feels seriously wrong

A pregnant woman should not ignore serious symptoms because she is afraid of “overreacting.” When something concerning happens, getting assessed promptly is safer than waiting.

9. Maintain healthy pregnancy habits

Appropriate nutrition, rest, physical activity when medically suitable, and prenatal care can support maternal health during pregnancy.

10. Keep both prayer and medical care together

Faith in God and responsible medical care do not have to compete. Pray for protection while also using the medical care available to you.
